Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept that has attracted worldwide attention and acquired significance in the global economy over the years. CSR refers to companies taking responsibility for their actions and the impact on the society at large. It is becoming a business standard now and as there is more awareness about continuing environmental degradation due to industrial activity, the focus has shifted to holding businesses accountable for their long term role in the society and the environment. This has prompted the corporate sector to look into their social responsibility and operate sustainably. Companies are under immense pressure to gain public trust and stay competitive in global economy and are adopting the philanthropic approach of giving back to the society and getting involved in social welfare and developmental activities. Companies are trying to develop business models where they can integrate ethical, social, environmental, employee and consumer concerns along with their business operations involving their stakeholders.

CSR is picking up fast in the Middle East as well. In October 2014, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry signed a memorandum of understanding with the General Secretariat of the Dubai Executive Council, to create a general CSR framework in Dubai which will serve as a reference for companies looking to adopt CSR initiatives.

Cleaning companies in the Middle East are adopting and also developing their own CSR strategies, which would not just contribute to their growth plans but also towards the well being of their employees, customers, stakeholders as well as the society at large. • Making bags from recycled polythene takes one third the Sulphur Dioxide and half the Nitrous Oxide, than making them from scratch.

Another form of recycling is composting household and garden waste.
