Quick Tips to Unclog a kitchen sink drain

If your kitchen sink is not draining properly and is starting to give off an odor, you may have a clog. Kitchen sink clogs are a common issue experienced by almost every household with the day-to-day extensive kitchen activities.

While a clogged kitchen sink is not an uncommon issue; it is important to be able to take care of a clog as soon as possible. If a blockage is allowed to build up, it can lead to burst pipes and an expensive visit from a professional plumber.

Here are some quick ways to unclog your kitchen sink:

  1. Use boiling water

Boiling water can help dislodge the sink clog. You can take half a gallon of water and put it to boil, then pour directly into the drain steadily. The water should begin to drain. If the water stands in the sink and the clog doesn’t move, give the water time to cool and remove it to try again.

  1. Check garbage disposal

Inspect to see if it is your garbage disposal that’s causing the problem. A clogged disposal can stop up the drain, so run the disposal to see if that clears the clog. Then inspect it to make sure it’s running correctly.

  1. Use a plunger

Plunge away the blockage by filling the sink with hot water until it’s about halfway full and creates a seal around the drain. Position the plunger over the drain and begin pumping up and down quickly several times. Remove the plunger and wait to see if the water drains. Repeat the process until the water drains freely.

  1. Vinegar and baking soda

Start by removing standing water first. Pour about a cup or so of baking soda into the drain, followed by an equal amount of white or apple cider vinegar. The solution will bubble, but when they subside, put the stopper in and wait about 15 minutes. Next, run hot water to see if the clog clears. Repeat if needed.

  1. Clean the P-trap

P-trap is the the elbow-shaped pipe under your sink. Food, grease and other debris may be stuck in the pipe, causing your sink to drain slowly or not at all because the water hits a snag on its way down.

While you can try these DIY methods, cleaning a clogged sink is not a pretty task and is best to be left in the hands of a professional!
